This piece has been recreated from a very old Daguerreotype Camera image in black & white. The background was plain but I responded to the image using these warm and calming colours. The Grandmother seemed to possess a very spiritual presence and I tried to put this over in the painting process. I have suggested an outside, evening atmosphere which could be firelight or a sunset. I believe I have created a peaceful, contemplative mood depicting the matriarchal love and strength of the tribe elder but also the sensitivity and pride she appears to feel for the little one. I really wanted to show respect for the elderly lady in the production of the painting.
