Jessica Stevenson
Jessica Stevenson’s work subverts the value of objects and time. Living in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, she plays with algorithmic games, using them as rules to complete time-consuming, repetitive tasks. For her canvas, she often chooses the unwanted and rejected, rigorously executing near-obsessive marks upon them before they are rejected again. Her interest lies in the meditation, relaxation, and boredom that come from repeated action—the creation of action to ‘pass time’ and to fill the moments between events, like the childish need to count steps to mask the walking itself. As her work progresses, she increasingly incorporates natural forms and colours, often utilising Geliplate printing and mark-making with found objects. This evolution emphasises her focus on the action of making rather than the object itself.
